Gippy Grewal (also called ‘Desi Rockstar’) is one of the popular & respected stars of Punjab. He is one of those stars of Punjabi cinema who has always worked hard & stayed away from the controversies. His films have contributed immensely to Punjabi cinema by bringing audiences back in theatres. He has given many hits over last 5-6 years.
But if one takes a look on the performance of his movies over the period of last two, two and half years, it seems he has lost his charm. None of his movies was able to attain a clean hit status. ‘Jatt James Bond’ was his last clean hit movie which released in April, 2014. ‘Double Di Trouble’ released after that couldn’t gather much and was just an average affair. In 2015, he made his Bollywood debut with, ‘Second hand husband’ and it was a disaster. After the unsuccessful Bollywood debut, he returned back to Pollywood with Faraar. Though critically acclaimed, Faraar also couldn’t get the kind of box office collections, one would have expected from Gippy’s film. Same thing happened with ‘Kaptaan’ released in May, 2016. Apart from this, his musical album ‘Desi Rockstar 2’ didn’t deliver much & was nowhere near to the first ‘Desi Rockstar’. His only noticeable achievement in past two years is his directional debut with ‘Ardass’.
There was a time when he along with Diljit was the leader of Punjabi film industry which is not the case now. Amrinder gill has already proven his mettle with back to back hits like ‘Angrej’ & ‘Love Punjab’. And, the way Ammy Virk is acting these days and the kind of roles he is playing, the competition is getting tougher now.
One would wonder what is going wrong for Gippy now a days, that nothing much is working for him. Was it the decision to act in too many comedy movies with same theme or too much hurry for a Bollywood debut? Or was it the insecurity of the loss of top position due to which he worked in few non sense movies with big budget?
Audience now a days is much wiser. The rise of social media like twitter, facebook has given the people choice of knowing the reviews/opinions of a new released movie before going to theatre. Gippy will have to understand the sentiments of people and will have to sign movies which offer something different to the audiences.
Hope his next release ‘Lock’ will live up to the expectations & will do wonders at the box office. All the best to Gippy for all his next ventures.
