maxresdefault Undoubtedly one of the most successful film directors in the history of Punjabi cinema, Anurag Singh is perhaps pollywood’s best known director after Manmohan Singh and one of the top grossers in the Punjabi film world.

Anurag singh the man behind all time block busters like , Jatt and Juliet 1 (2012), Jatt and Juliet 2 (2013),Disco Singh (2014)  and Yaar Anmulle (2011)  talks about his upcoming Punjabi movie ‘Punjab 1984’ and more…..

Anurag Singh speaks exclusively to Punjab Vision

Is it true that the story of ‘Punjab 1984’ has a backdrop of terrorism?

Punjab 1984 is the story of a mother and a son and the story is set in Punjab and covers the time period from 1984 to 1986. And we all know what was happening in Punjab at that time. So yes you can say that events that took place in Punjab during that time form a backdrop of the story.

Do you think that the audiences will appreciate your approach?

Whenever we (me and my team) make a film, our first concern is whether it is a good story and whether it is something we will enjoy doing. Once we are satisfied about this, we just go ahead and give it our best shot without thinking about how the audience will respond. Especially, in this film the audience response is the last thing on our minds. This was a story that we wanted to do. This is a film straight from the heart – honest, emotional and raw!

Don’t you think it’s yet another film based on the 1984 issue?

I don’t know about other films (and frankly there haven’t been that many films on this topic), but we have made the film with a fresh perspective and have tried to give it a unique voice. Hopefully the audience will realize that while watching the film.

If this film is banned, what will you do?

I hope it won’t be banned as there is nothing controversial in the movie. It is an emotional mother-son story and I think everyone who sees it will realize that there is no reason to ban it.

Will this movie change the face of Punjabi cinema?

I don’t know. Only time and God knows what sort of impact it will have.

Going away from “FUNPUNABI” not a risk?

Every movie is a risk. Even a comedy film can fail. Any film that I do, I don’t view it as being risky or safe, I just see it as something I want to do and something I don’t want to do. And this is a film that I desperately wanted to do. And I am glad that my producers backed me.

What is DILJIT DOSANJH like?

Well he is super talented, probably the best leading actor in Punjabi cinema right now. Also, he is hard working with no starry airs or tantrums and is a fun guy to hang out with. His dedication to his art is amazing. But most importantly, he is a great human being!

Why are you most attached to DILJIT?

There are many reasons why I am attached to him but the most important one is that he is a very good human being (as I mentioned above). Apart from this another important reason is the fact that we have covered this journey from Jatt and Juliet1 to Punjab 1984 together. We have seen several ups and downs, we have toiled, suffered and enjoyed our successes. At times I have felt like giving up and he has pushed me and vice versa. We have travelled this road together. So it is obvious that I am attached to him.

Rank Diljit as an actor?

He is The Best Leading Actor we have in Punjabi cinema right now.    In fact I think he should be working in Hindi movies as well because his talent deserves that.

Who is the music director of this film?

There are several music directors who have worked on the film. Gurmeet Singh ji has done a few songs. Nick Dhammu ji has done a couple of songs while Jatinder Shah ji will be doing one song and so will be Gurmoh. And I must say they all have done a fabulous job!

Want to say anything about DISCO SINGH?

Well Disco Singh is a project on which we had worked really really hard, even more than the other projects as it had to be completed within a short time span. And I just want to say thank you to those who liked it and to those who didn’t, I would like to say that my team will try to do better the next time.

How do you compare DISCO SINGH with your other films?

Others might be able to do it but I can’t as I don’t have the objectivity needed to make the comparison.  I am as attached to Disco Singh as I am to my other films.

Please tell us about your next film?

Right now I’m totally focused on Punjab 1984 which is releasing on 27th June 2014. And after that…I don’t know what I’ll do next.
