Movie: Nankana

Director: Manjeet Maan

Star cast: Gurdas Maan, Kavita Kaushik, Anas Rashid

After a fairly long time, legendary singer-actor Gurdas Maan returns to the silver screen with Punjabi film Nankana. The film directed by Manjeet Maan had people contemplating about the title of the film, seeing it under the religious light.

But Nankana turns out to be a story of love and brotherhood in the time of partition.

With a predictable, ‘been there done that’ storyline, the film moves on a lethargic pace from the word go. Even though Manjeet Maan has kept the film crisp, making sure every character in the film makes a difference; Nankana still fails to make an impact. The film can be inspiring and even motivating for some but it comes across as a re-run of lessons we’ve heard a million times before.

Starring Gurdas Maan and Kavita Kaushik in the lead, the film also stars television actor Anas Rashid who makes his debut in Nankana. When it comes to Gurdas Maan, one expects nothing but the best from him, which he does deliver, but with more or less am expressions throughout the film. Next up is Kavita Kaushik, the actress who made her debut with Binnu Dhillon’s Vekh Baraatan Challiyan, Kavita not only does justice to her role, she looks like she belongs to the industry already, and so does Anas Rashid, though both need to work on their diction.

The film has many emotional stopovers, which pass by without leaving the audience teary-eyed. The artistes are at their best behaviour, even when they are expected to react; they do so in a subtle way.

The fight scene in the climax comes across as way to energetic, given the fact that the film had been moving on a slow pace throughout.

Jatinder Shah’s music is a plus point, which stands out. Punjabi actress Aditi Sharma’s special appearance is a total waste, even though Aditi is a fine actress, her being in the film doesn’t make any difference. Nankana makes for a pleasant watch, if only you are interested in some lessons in love and brotherhood, at a slow pace.
