Too emotional to be entertaining

Movie: Asees

Director: Rana Ranbir

Star cast: Rana Ranbir, Rupinder Rupi, Kuljinder Sidhu.

Rana Ranbir, needs no introduction, he is a fine actor, theatreperson, dialogue and script writer, as well as, comedian. With his newly- released film Asees, he proves that he is a fine director too, with some glitches here and there of course.

The story of Asees is not a revelation; the mother-son relation has been explored in many films before. Nevertheless, what makes Asees a must-watch are the emotional rumblings that it manages to create, which start to weigh heavy after a while.

Asees directed by Rana Ranbir stars Rana Ranbir in the lead role along with Rupinder Rupi, Kuljinder Sidhu, Sardar Sohi and other artistes.

Asees can clearly be seen in two parts, Asees before and after the interval. The first half is packed with emotions, which are well- placed and managed. The director manages to touch our hearts with his heart wrenching dialogues. However, after the interval, the same emotions do not stir any feeling, as they look forcibly induced. The second part clearly needs an editor hand to cut extra frills, or let’s say, extra emotions.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Asees is neither about characters nor about the story, it totally revolves around mother-son relation, which has been portrayed beautifully by Rana Ranbir and Rupinder Rupi. Both the artistes have played their part sensitively, justifying every bit of it. Kuljinder Sidhu of Saada Haq fame has done justice to his character as well. You will be pleasantly surprised to see Gippy Grewal and Sardar Sohi in short and ineffective roles. Their presence does nothing to the film however.

Asees is also a reflection of Rana Ranbir’s theatrical excellence, but as a film, Asees makes for a great watch, if you are carrying an extra handkerchief but!

Rating: ** and a half
