Empty promises leave a bland taste

Movie: Golak Bugni Bank Te Batua

Star cast: Harish Verma, Simi Chahal, BN Sharma, Jaswinder Bhalla, Anita Devgan, Pukhraj Bhalla, Sumit Gulati, Amrinder Gill, Aditi Sharma

Director: Ksshitij Chaudhary

Punjabi cinema is certainly taking risks, experimenting with new stories and topics, bringing in fine actors… it’s sure doing a lot. Golak Bugni Bank Te Batua is one such attempt, where the subject of demonetisation is dealt with in an interesting manner. But the sad part is that just like the fate of demonetisation, the film too created noise with the trailer but the final outcome couldn’t whip up interest.

Director Ksshitij Chaudhary has given a fine treatment to the interesting subject but at the same time; he could not create an impact. It’s like he has made a samosa with the right amount of aloo (potatoes), and right amount of salt, but he forgot to put in chaat masala or be that secret ingredient that would have made this samosa yummy!

Kudos for the screenplay of the film written by Dheeraj Rattan. The dialogues in the film are by and large laced in comedy, but this time, too much sweetness has taken away the balance of the dish (film). The film stars actors Harish Verma, Simi Chahal in the lead, the two definitely make for a watchable on screen pair. Harish and Simi both have already proved their acting talent in previous films; both are also director’s actors, so in the end it is up to the director how he gets work out of them.

Actors BN Sharma, Jaswinder Bhalla and Anita Devgan add comedy tadka in the film but here too, this tadka tastes the same. In fact newness in the film comes from young actors Pukhraj Bhalla and Sumit Gulati (who was also seen in Bollywood film Talvar). The two add new flavours to the film.

Interestingly or not, Golak Bugni Bank Te Batua also has a parallel track of Amrinder Gill and Aditi Sharma running in the film, which till the end seems to be an uncalled for addition. It is almost like that extra topping of cheese that could have been avoided.

This however doesn’t stop us for appreciating Amrinder Gill and Aditi Sharma’s role. Amrinder has delivered an absolutely fine performance and so has Aditi Sharma.

The music of the film is given by Jatinder Shah, which is humable and foot-tapping. In the end, if you are going after watching the trailer, be ready to feel slightly disappointed, you won’t find much worth on opening this bugni!

Rating: ** and a half
